Somerset

Long overdue trip to see my sister in Somerset.

We had a well planned journey leaving on Thursday 11th Dec. First stop was a visit to Camping and Caravan Club site in Winchcombe near Tewksbury. We had a lovely spot overlooking the lake, so after a nearly 4 hour journey we chilled for a while, agonising over visiting a local pub, which we’ve never been to before. The pub was the Hobnails Inn which looks nice from the outside. The campsite also recommended the Gardner’s Arms nearby. We studied menus and chose the latter, and booked. Next was the adventure of popping off site, which we did quite effortlessly. OK sort of meal but the pub was cold even though we were sat in front of a fake log fire which looked nice but produced no heat.

Next day we drove to my sisters. We had plenty of time so diverted to have lunch by Woodhill Bay in Portishead. The last bit of the journey was marred by roadworks and ignoring Google Map’s diversion led to about 30 minutes delay on the M5. We just managed to fit in my sisters drive and plugged in to her electric. We had a very pleasant stay and left on Sunday morning.

We had booked at the Caravan Club site in Chichester but stopped on the way to look at Avebury. WE couldn’t fit in the car park so Blue Badged it near a junction where we caused no problems. We had a nice look round the National Trust property with lunch and museum and then wandered round the stone circle and did a little shopping in the Tourist shop. Chichester site is working towards fully automatic which prepayment, NPR and pick your own pitch the next the pitch number. We needed to pay so didn’t get the full experience. Monday saw a planned drive through the Cotswolds.

First stop was Bourton on the Water. We Blue Badged it on a fairly central street. We had a wander round this very busy tourist attraction and had a cup of coffee. Next was Stow on the Wold where we had lunch and a good look round because S wanted to do some shopping. The parking was once again very creative. We didn’t stop in Moreton in the Marsh. We were following Fosse Way which both of us had used to get to Cornwall / Devon as children. We went north as far as we could before diverting off to stop on the Caravan Club site at Warwick Racecourse. The site is in the middle of the course so we had to drive over the sand covered race track. Quite a small site. We undertook the short walk into Warwick to look for somewhere to eat. We found a nice square and had a pint but didn’t fancy much on the menu. We asked where there might be an Italian and had a 10 minute walk to get there but it was worth it. Two nice pizzas later, we walked back to the van.

Tuesday saw us driving home. The drive was uneventful. Overall we achieved 32.1 mpg.
